A Brief on SASSA Appeal and SRD Grant
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) plays a critical role in the South African Government’s social security system. Established in 2005, SASSA is instrumental in managing the distribution of various social relief grants under the purview of the Department of Social Development. SASSA strives to centralize relief distribution and reduce corruption, thereby offering substantial support to those in need. Here’s a closer look at how to appeal the SASSA SRD grant, check the R350 appeal status, and access support if needed.
Introduction to SASSA
In 2022, over 45% of South African citizens benefited from some form of social relief grant provided by SASSA based on their needs, such as Child Support Grants, Disability Grants, and SRD Grants.

Understanding SASSA Appeal Status
It’s common to wonder why your SASSA application was rejected or why you haven’t received the grant payment. Owing to the high volume of applications received by SASSA, the process can sometimes be delayed. However, if your application is rejected, it’s essential to check the reason cited for rejection. It could be due to inaccurate information provided or missing bank account details. After updating your details, you’d need to wait for the grant to be processed. It generally takes between 60 and 90 days for the authorities to review your appeal. After approval, you’ll be entitled to receive the grant for the previous months and continue receiving it at the appointed time.
How to Appeal for SRD Grant
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant aims to provide financial assistance to those unable to meet their basic needs of food and shelter. Those who have suffered an unforeseen disaster or crisis, or those who are waiting for their grants but haven’t received them yet, may apply for the SRD Grant. It is generally offered for three months but can be extended to six months.
Checking R350 Appeal Status
You can conveniently check the status of your R350 appeal through different ways like visiting the SASSA main portal, contacting the authorities on the helpline number mentioned on the portal or visiting the local SASSA office. Also, you can drop them an email. The approved applicants will receive the R350 grant for a period of six months ending in October.
SRD Helpline and Support
If you encounter any issues while applying, feel free to reach out to the officials via the helpline on 0800601011 or drop an email at grantenquiries @ sassa.gov.za to get your queries resolved.
Ensuring a seamless and efficient social relief system is a cornerstone of effective governance, and SASSA is playing a pivotal role in this endeavour in South Africa.
