SASSA Payment Increase: How Much SASSA Payment is Expected to Increase in 2024?

In South Africa, many individuals rely on the payments provided by SASSA (South African Social Security Agency). These monthly payments assist qualified individuals in meeting their financial needs. SASSA has recently announced that they will be increasing some of these grants for the year 2024.

Expected Increase in SASSA Payments for 2024

Currently, SASSA offers various grants to eligible individuals including the Older Person’s Grant, War Veteran’s Grant, Disability Grant, Grant in Aid, Foster Child Grant, and Covid Relief Grant. SASSA has also announced the extension of the Covid Relief Grant until March 2025, allowing eligible recipients to receive payments until that time.

The specific increase percentage for each grant can be found on the authorized websites of SASSA and the South African Government. For example, the Child Support Grant will increase from R480 to R505 in February, and then to R510 in subsequent months. However, the R350 Grant is expected to remain the same in 2024, while the Grant in Aid will stay at R510 per month. Each grant is issued if the application is approved and the eligibility requirements are met each month.

SASSA Payments

The monthly payments for SASSA grants vary depending on the type of grant. Each grant serves a specific purpose and has its own set of eligibility requirements. Here are some examples:

Older Person’s Grant

This grant is provided to citizens aged 60 and older. The current payment rate is R2090 per month, with an increased payment of R2110 for individuals over 75 years old. The financial requirement for this grant is an income limit of R86280 (Single) or R172 560 (Married).

Grant in Aid

If a person receives a Social Grant but cannot take care of themselves, they can apply for an additional Grant in Aid. This grant provides support to the person taking care of them, with a maximum amount of R510 per month. To qualify, individuals must be receiving a disability grant, an older person’s grant, or a war veteran’s grant.

Child Support Grant

The Child Support Grant is intended to assist individuals who need financial help in raising a child. The grant is available for children under 18 years old, with a maximum amount of R51 per child per month.

War Veteran’s Grant

Former soldiers who fought in the Korean War or the 2nd World War and are unable to support themselves can receive the War Veteran’s Grant. The maximum payment for this grant is R2110 per month. To be eligible, individuals must be 60 years or older or have a disability.

Social Relief of Distress

This grant provides temporary assistance to those in urgent need of financial aid to meet their basic needs. Currently, the monthly payment for this grant is R350. It is available to individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirements for other SASSA grants.

Care Dependency Grant

The Care Dependency Grant is available for children with severe disabilities who require full-time care. It can be provided from birth until the child turns 18, as long as the child and the caregiver live in South Africa. The payment for this grant is R2090 per month. The grant will cease if the child passes away, turns 18, leaves the country, or is admitted to a state institution. It can also be discontinued if the caregiver fails to claim the grant for three consecutive months.

The government will announce the specific payment increases for these grants in 2024 in due course. For more information and updates, refer to the authorized websites of SASSA and the South African Government.
